Waste and Recycling - U.S. and Canada Bid Requests

In 2015, the demand for waste and recycling solutions and services was substantial throughout the United States and Canada. So far in the 2015 calendar year, there have been 948 applicable government bids, which fell under "public works, water, and sanitation". An additional 220 proposals were for relevant "heavy machinery and industrial equipment" category purchases. Along with the solicitations in these categories, there were a total of 1,260 bid requests for waste, garbage, refuse, and recycling, and the like.

In my capacity of overseeing BidPrime's client support, my team and I interact with a number of industry contractors and subs who work with federal, state, county, municipal, and Canadian government entities. For some, government business is the very lifeblood of their business. To gain a better understanding of the role government is playing in the waste and recycling marketplace, I partnered with two of our analysts to research the industry.

Statista reported that as recent as 2013, in the U.S. alone, municipal solid waste generation was 254.1 millions of tons. Recycling of U.S. municipal solid waste was 64.7 millions of tons. In addition, they project that by 2020, the projected size of the U.S. market for waste management will be $139 billion dollars.

In a similar review, Statistics Canada noted that Canada produced 25 million tonnes of total waste disposal, with Ontario and Quebec far outdistancing the other provinces. Back in 2013, CBCNEWS reported that Canadians, "produce more garbage per capita than any other country on earth".

Examples of past requests in '15 (see below for sample active bids): garbage and trash service, refuse vehicles, recycling services, single stream recycling, trash trucks, trash pumps, recycle bins, trash hoppers, garbage containers, refuse packers, electronics recycling... You get the idea, there has been a varied list of services and solutions requested.

Attorney and Legal Services - SLED Leading Way in Requests

"If we desire respect for the law, we must first make the law respectable." - Louis D. Brandeis

A recent study we conducted revealed that governments throughout the United States are leveraging outside sources for legal representation and to attend to specific matters. While there have been a noticeable number of requests originating in the federal sphere, a preponderance of solicitations are coming from state, local, and education (SLED).

Examples of the pertinent requests: legal services, city attorney, contract attorney, prosecuting attorney, and legal representation. Within these variations of requests, multiple instances of each request were noted by our analysts.

Encompassing the past twelve months, there have been 720 total requests put forth by governments in the United States. While each state in the union has submitted requests, the following illustrates the leading U.S. regions and entities...
